Counting the whole day

A bouncer for twenty minutes sounds harmless, and it is. The number that matters is the total across a day, once you add the car seat, the stroller, the swing and the high chair. Those all hold a baby in roughly the same position.

Add them up honestly on an ordinary Tuesday and the total surprises most people. Nobody plans four hours of containers. They accumulate in fifteen minute pieces while you make dinner.

What the time is taken from

It comes out of floor time, which is where a baby pushes against something. Rolling, pushing up, reaching sideways and eventually shuffling all need a flat surface and nothing holding the trunk in place.

The general guidance is short spells, broken up, with the total kept modest. Twenty minutes at a time is a sensible working rule, and a blanket on the floor next to whatever you are doing is the swap.

Bouncers and sleep

A bouncer is a seat for an awake baby. Babies fall asleep in them constantly, which is normal and is also the moment to move them to a flat surface rather than leave a good thing alone.

It is worth deciding this in advance, because at eleven at night nobody makes that decision well.

Sitting up before sitting up

Propped upright is not the same as sitting. A chair that holds a baby vertical before the neck and trunk can do it themselves is doing the work instead of the muscles that need it.

Which is why a bouncer at a shallow recline, used in short spells, is the sane version of the thing rather than the fully upright seat used all afternoon.

The keepsakes

The other half of this section is not equipment at all. A memory book gets filled in once and kept for decades, and a first rattle usually ends up in the same box.
